Watering Schedule Guides
Learn exactly how much and how often to water every plant in your garden
The Golden Rule of Watering
Water deeply and less frequently rather than shallowly and often. This encourages roots to grow deep, making plants more drought-resistant and healthier.
Quick test: Stick your finger 2 inches into the soil. If it's dry, water. If moist, wait.

General Watering Tips
Best Time to Water
Early morning (6-10am) is ideal. Water has time to soak in before evaporation, and leaves dry before evening, preventing disease.
Water the Roots
Direct water at the base of plants, not the leaves. Wet foliage promotes fungal diseases. Drip irrigation or soaker hoses work best.
Mulch Saves Water
2-4 inches of mulch reduces evaporation by up to 70%, keeps soil cooler, and means you water less often.
Adjust for Conditions
Water more in hot, windy, or dry weather. Water less in cool, cloudy, or humid conditions. Container plants need more than in-ground.
Signs of Watering Problems
Underwatering Signs
- • Wilting (especially in afternoon)
- • Dry, cracked soil
- • Yellowing lower leaves
- • Slow growth, small fruits
- • Leaf edges turning brown/crispy
Overwatering Signs
- • Wilting despite wet soil
- • Yellow leaves throughout plant
- • Soggy, waterlogged soil
- • Root rot (brown, mushy roots)
- • Fungus gnats or mold on soil
