Quick Basil Wilt Diagnosis
Common Causes & Solutions
Underwatering
Basil has shallow roots and needs consistent moisture. Wilts dramatically when dry but recovers quickly. Fix: Water when top inch of soil is dry. Container basil may need daily watering in summer. Mulch to retain moisture.
Overwatering & Root Rot
Soggy soil suffocates roots, causing wilt despite wet conditions. Stems may blacken at soil line. Fix: Improve drainage, let soil dry between waterings, repot in fresh soil. Remove damaged roots. Consider a terracotta pot for better drying.
Heat Stress
Basil wilts in afternoon heat as leaves lose water faster than roots can replace it. Usually recovers by evening. Fix: Water in the morning, provide afternoon shade when temps exceed 90°F, mulch soil to keep roots cool.
Transplant Shock
Basil often wilts after transplanting due to root disturbance. Fix: Transplant in evening or cloudy weather, water well, provide shade for a few days. Roots recover in 3-7 days. Avoid fertilizing until established.
