Tomato Spacing Guide

Give your tomatoes room to grow for maximum harvests

Quick Reference

Determinate: 18-24" apart
Indeterminate: 24-36" apart
Row spacing: 4-5 feet
Min container: 5 gallons

Spacing by Tomato Type

Determinate (Bush) Tomatoes

Grow to a fixed height (3-4 feet), produce fruit all at once, then stop. Compact growth habit.

  • Between plants: 18-24 inches
  • Between rows: 3-4 feet
  • With cages: 24 inches minimum
  • Examples: Roma, Celebrity, Rutgers

Indeterminate (Vining) Tomatoes

Keep growing all season (6-10+ feet), produce fruit continuously until frost. Need more space.

  • Between plants: 24-36 inches
  • Between rows: 4-5 feet
  • Staked/pruned: 18-24 inches possible
  • Examples: Beefsteak, Cherokee Purple, Sun Gold

Spacing by Support Method

Caged Tomatoes

Cages allow plants to grow naturally but take up more horizontal space. Space plants 24-36 inches apart with 4-5 feet between rows to accommodate cages and allow access.

Staked Tomatoes

Staked and pruned to 1-2 leaders, tomatoes can be planted closer - 18-24 inches for indeterminate, 12-18 for determinate. Requires regular pruning of suckers.

Sprawling (No Support)

Unsupported tomatoes need the most space - 3-4 feet between plants, 5-6 feet between rows. Uses more garden space but less work. Higher disease risk from ground contact.

Raised Bed & Container Spacing

Raised Beds

  • • 4x4 bed: 1-4 tomatoes (4 is tight)
  • • 4x8 bed: 2-6 tomatoes
  • • Space 24" apart in all directions
  • • Put at north end to avoid shading
  • • Use stakes to save space

Containers

  • Minimum: 5-gallon pot per plant
  • Better: 10-15 gallon pot
  • Best: 20+ gallons or half barrel
  • • One tomato per container (always)
  • • Compact/patio varieties for small pots

Pro Tips for Tomato Spacing

  • Plant deep! Bury 2/3 of the stem - roots form along buried stem
  • North side of garden - Tall tomatoes won't shade other plants
  • Air circulation prevents disease - Don't sacrifice spacing for quantity
  • Prune suckers on indeterminate types to manage size in tight spaces

Frequently Asked Questions

How far apart should tomatoes be planted?

Space determinate tomatoes 18-24 inches apart in rows 3-4 feet apart. Indeterminate tomatoes need 24-36 inches between plants and 4-5 feet between rows. Staked plants can be closer than caged or sprawling plants.

Can I plant tomatoes closer together?

You can reduce spacing slightly with good staking, pruning, and air circulation. But closer planting increases disease risk and can reduce yields. Better to have fewer healthy plants than many struggling ones.

How deep should tomatoes be planted?

Bury tomato stems deep - up to 2/3 of the plant. Roots will form along the buried stem, creating a stronger plant. Remove lower leaves before planting deep.

How much space do tomatoes need in a container?

Each tomato needs at least a 5-gallon container. One tomato per container is ideal. Determinate varieties can work in smaller pots, but bigger is always better.
