Carrot Spacing Guide

Thin for success - crowded carrots stay small

Quick Reference

Between plants: 2-3 inches
Between rows: 12-18 inches
Baby carrots: 1-2 inches
Per square foot: 16 plants

Thinning Is Essential!

Carrot seeds are tiny and hard to sow at final spacing. The solution: sow thickly, then thin ruthlessly. Skipping thinning is the #1 cause of stunted, forked carrots.

Spacing by Carrot Type

Standard/Long Carrots

Nantes, Imperator, Danvers types - 6-10 inches long.

  • Final spacing: 2-3 inches apart
  • • Need deep, loose soil (10-12 inches)
  • • Examples: Scarlet Nantes, Bolero

Baby & Short Carrots

Chantenay, Paris Market, baby types - 2-6 inches.

  • Final spacing: 1-2 inches apart
  • • Good for heavy or rocky soil
  • • Examples: Little Finger, Paris Market

Round Carrots

Ball-shaped varieties for containers and shallow soil.

  • Final spacing: 2-3 inches apart
  • • Only need 4-6 inches of soil depth
  • • Examples: Thumbelina, Atlas

How to Thin Carrots

1

First Thinning (2" tall)

When seedlings are 2 inches tall, thin to 1 inch apart. Snip with scissors at soil level to avoid disturbing neighboring roots.

2

Second Thinning (3-4" tall)

Thin to final spacing (2-3 inches) when tops are 3-4 inches tall. These thinnings are big enough to eat as baby carrots!

3

Post-Thinning Care

Water gently after thinning. Fill any holes to prevent green shoulders. The carrot fly is attracted to thinning - do it in evening and cover afterward.

Raised Bed & Container Spacing

Raised Beds

Ideal for carrots - loose soil, no rocks.

  • • Space 2-3 inches apart all directions
  • • 16 carrots per square foot
  • • Fill bed with loose, sifted soil
  • • Bed depth: 12+ inches for long types

Containers

Use deep containers and short/round varieties.

  • Minimum depth: 8 inches (12" better)
  • • Space 2 inches apart
  • • Choose short varieties for pots
  • • Keep soil consistently moist

Frequently Asked Questions

How far apart should carrots be planted?

Thin carrots to 2-3 inches apart for full-sized varieties, 1-2 inches for baby carrots. Rows should be 12-18 inches apart, or plant in wide bands using intensive spacing.

When should I thin carrots?

Thin when seedlings are 2 inches tall. Do it in stages - first to 1 inch apart, then to final spacing when they're 3-4 inches tall. The thinnings are edible!

Can I plant carrot seeds too close?

Yes! Crowded carrots produce small, misshapen roots. Carrots also have poor germination, so sow thickly initially but thin ruthlessly once they sprout.

How many carrots per square foot?

In square foot gardening, plant 16 carrots per square foot (4x4 grid with 3-inch spacing). For baby carrots, you can fit more.
