How to Save Cucumber Seeds

Let one cucumber go way overripe to save hundreds of seeds

Cross-Pollination Warning

Cucumbers are insect-pollinated and cross easily with other cucumber varieties (and sometimes melons!). For pure seeds, grow only one variety or isolate by 1/2 mile. Otherwise, enjoy the surprises!

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Choose Your Cucumber

Select a cucumber from a healthy, productive plant. Mark it with string or a stake so you (and family members!) don't accidentally harvest it.

2

Let It Over-Ripen

Leave the cucumber on the vine until it turns yellow or orange and becomes soft/squishy - 4-6 weeks past eating stage. It will look terrible! That's perfect.

3

Cut Open & Scoop Seeds

Cut the cucumber in half lengthwise. Scoop out the seeds and pulp into a clean glass jar. Add enough water to cover if needed.

4

Ferment for 2-3 Days

Cover loosely and let sit at room temperature for 2-3 days. Stir once daily. A moldy film will form on top - this is normal fermentation action.

5

Rinse & Separate

Add water, stir, and pour off floating debris. Viable seeds sink to the bottom. Repeat rinsing until you have clean seeds. Drain through a strainer.

6

Dry Thoroughly

Spread seeds on a plate or screen to dry for 1-2 weeks. Stir daily to prevent clumping. Seeds should snap, not bend, when fully dry.

7

Store Properly

Store in labeled paper envelopes inside an airtight container. Keep cool, dark, and dry. Cucumber seeds are very long-lived when stored well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do cucumber seeds need fermentation?

Like tomatoes, cucumbers have a gel coating around seeds that inhibits germination. Fermentation removes this coating and also kills some seed-borne diseases. It mimics natural decomposition.

How ripe should cucumbers be for seed saving?

Much riper than eating stage! Leave cucumbers on the vine until they turn yellow/orange and become soft. This is 4-6 weeks past normal harvest - seeds need this time to fully mature.

Will different cucumber varieties cross?

Yes, cucumbers cross-pollinate readily via bees. If growing multiple varieties, only save seed from one, isolate by 1/2 mile, or use hand-pollination with bagging for pure seed.

How long do cucumber seeds last?

Properly dried and stored cucumber seeds remain viable for 5-10 years! Store in cool, dry, dark conditions in airtight containers.
